William Dunn (1916-1995)
First American Ace of World War II
The first American pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft during World War II, who was also the first American ace during that war, had earlier lived in North Dakota. William Dunn was born in Minneapolis, but after the divorce of his parents when he was seven, he bounced back and forth between his mom and dad. In order to get some stability in his life, he was sent to live with his grandparents on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Dunn attended school at Van Hook during the winter and joined his Native American friends, rounding up wild horses, in the Badlands during the summer. He first joined the military in 1934 as a buck private and was discharged in 1973 as a lieutenant colonel. During World War II, Dunn saw action in both the European and Asian campaigns and was still active when he was sent to Vietnam in 1967.
