KELLY, YELLOWSTONE (1849-1928)
Pony Express Rider Whose Exploits Became Legend
In 1959, famed movie director John Ford planned on making a film about a person whose exploits in the territories of northern Dakota and Montana became legendary. Ford intended to star John Wayne as Yellowstone Kelly in the film, but when he decided to turn his attention to the movie Horse Soldiers, it was left to others to make the film. In a fictionalized version of Yellowstone Kelly that was released in late 1959, television star Clint Walker played the title role.
